What to Order at Bouchon Bakery

The bakery exists because The French Laundry needed bread. It stayed open to the public because the queue never stopped, and the counter now defines a morning in Yountville.

    The order

Start with the plain croissant — the honest test of any bakery — then the pain au chocolat and the épi baguette. The TKO and the house Nutter Butter are the pastry counter's American jokes, done properly.

Macarons travel well; laminated pastry does not. Buy viennoiserie to eat immediately and cookies to take home.

    Timing

Before 10am the counter moves quickly and the full range is available. By early afternoon in high season the bread is gone and the queue is long.

There is a small amount of outdoor seating; most people walk their order to the park bench opposite.
