Bouchon is the answer to the sentence that begins 'we could not get The French Laundry'. It is also, on its own terms, one of the best bistros in the country.

Bouchon takes conventional reservations rather than prepaid tickets, and tables are usually available within days rather than months. A week's notice is comfortable for most dates.
The exceptions are harvest weekends in September and October and the Christmas period, when a month's notice is sensible.
The bar takes walk-ins and serves the full menu. On a weekday evening you will usually be seated within twenty minutes, and it is the best seat in the house for a solo diner.
Late service is a genuine feature: Bouchon serves well after most Napa kitchens have closed, which makes it the default post-tasting-menu destination for restaurant staff.
Lunch on a weekday is quiet, bright and easy. Late evening — after nine — is when the room fills with people who cook for a living, and the atmosphere is entirely different.
Sunday brunch is the busiest single service of the week. Book it.
Bouchon handles groups far more easily than the tasting-menu restaurants and is genuinely comfortable with children, which makes it the practical choice for a family in Yountville.
For parties above six, call rather than booking online.
Note dietary requirements in the reservation and mention any celebration. The bistro handles both without ceremony.
If you want the terrace in summer or the bar in winter, say so — both are frequently available on request and rarely offered unprompted.
Bouchon Bakery is next door and needs no reservation at all. A pastry in the morning and the bistro in the evening is the classic Yountville day for anyone without a French Laundry ticket.
The bakery closes in the afternoon; go early.
