Mountain fruit — Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Mount Veeder — gives structure and freshness that the valley floor cannot always match, and it is often less expensive on a list.
For whites, Carneros Chardonnay and the cooler edges of the valley pair better with early seafood courses than a big oaked bottling would.
Cellars in the valley hold library vintages that are drinking now. A fifteen-year-old Cabernet from a good but unfashionable estate is frequently the best-value bottle on any Napa list.
Ask directly for older vintages rather than scanning the current releases — they are often listed in a separate section.
