Luxury Travel in California, Planned Around the Table

California rewards the traveller who plans around meals rather than sights. The distances are long, the seasons are strange, and the restaurants are worth the detour.

    Start in San Francisco

The city offers the state's deepest restaurant scene and is the natural arrival point for Napa. Two nights before heading north is the right amount — enough for one serious dinner and one good walk.

Book the city restaurant a month ahead; the best rooms in San Francisco are harder to get than people expect.

    North to wine country

Ninety minutes from the city puts you in Yountville. Three nights here, built around one major reservation, is the core of any food-led California trip.

This is where the budget concentrates. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it.

    • SFO or Oakland — arrival
    • 2 nights San Francisco
    • 3 nights Yountville
    • Optional: 2 nights Sonoma or the coast

The coast, if you have time

Highway 1 south through Big Sur is one of the great drives, and the Central Coast has serious wine and a handful of exceptional restaurants without Napa's prices.

Add four days if you want to do this properly. Attempting it in two turns a highlight into a slog.

Los Angeles at the other end

LA's dining is the most varied in the state and the least formal. It works better as a separate trip than as the tail end of a wine-country week.

If you do combine them, fly rather than drive the final leg.

    Budgeting honestly

A week combining San Francisco and Napa at the luxury end, with one three-star dinner and daily tastings, runs to a substantial five-figure sum for two people once flights, hotels and wine are included.

It can be done for considerably less by shifting to shoulder season, staying in Napa town rather than Yountville, and using the group's casual restaurants.

    Seasonality

San Francisco is cold and foggy in summer and warm in September. Napa is the reverse of what visitors expect. The best combined month is generally late April or early October.

Whatever the month, pack layers. The temperature swing between the coast and the valley is routinely twenty degrees.
